All About DMX Splitters

6 Minute Read

For implementing large-scale lighting projects such as concert venues, theatrical productions, or architectural illumination, it often becomes necessary to deploy numerous lighting fixtures. The standard DMX512 protocol has limitations on the number of devices that can be connected to a single line. When connecting many devices to one line, the signal weakens, leading to distortions and data loss. To solve this problem, DMX splitters are used, allowing for more fixtures to be connected and complex lighting compositions to be created.

What is a Splitter

A DMX splitter is a specialized device that connects to a console or converter and distributes the DMX signal across multiple independent lines. The splitter optimizes the main line by creating separate branches, each capable of supporting additional groups of lighting fixtures. Each branch receives an amplified copy of the original signal, ensuring reliable operation throughout the entire system. Implementing a professional splitter for DMX distribution and amplification is far more efficient than running extensive cable installations throughout a venue. The splitter optimizes the operation of lighting equipment, allowing you to create device groups and effectively manage stage lighting.

DMX Splitter with galvanic isolation

Beyond signal splitting, professional DMX splitters with galvanic galvanic isolation solve one of the most common problems in lighting equipment – the risk of equipment damage due to short circuits. Sundrax splitters not only duplicate the DMX signal but also provide galvanic isolation on each port, reliably protecting equipment from power surges. This means that any interference or short circuits on one line will not affect the operation of other connected devices, preserving expensive lighting equipment. Using a professional opto-splitter between the DMX controller and lighting is a rational solution for protecting equipment and increasing the stability of the entire system. Simply connect your devices, and the Sundrax splitter will take care of reliable and safe signal distribution.

Duo Splitters - Maximum Capabilities in One Device

Duo splitters are freely configurable, adapting to various lighting system requirements. Each device can function as either a single splitter or as two independent splitters. Single-channel mode divides one DMX signal into several, while dual-channel mode can combine two different DMX signals into one or split them.

Sectional Duo splitters enable the creation of flexible device groups – for example, combining three devices into one group controlled by DMX-1, while controlling the other three via DMX-2. They will operate independently of each other, which is convenient for projects with multiple lighting zones. The same splitter can be used for control via a single DMX channel – the device will receive the signal on one input, amplify it, and distribute it to several outputs.

Each device in the Sundrax splitter family offers from 4 to 10 outputs depending on the model. Need additional outputs? Simply add another splitter to the chain! Compact and lightweight, it's perfect for expanding your DMX network without signal quality loss.

Every Detail is Thoughtfully Designed to Enhance Your Projects' Performance

Our professional splitters set new standards in the lighting design industry. They simplify the lighting technician's work while expanding lighting control capabilities. At the core of each device is a unique, proprietary PCB design, guaranteeing the highest quality and reliability. We consider even the smallest nuances to provide you with tools that help realize any ideas:

  • SPI protocol ensures precise and independent control over each group of connected devices.
  • All devices operate without damage even at voltages up to 300 volts.
  • 0.5 seconds is all it takes to start working with the splitter.
  • Our splitters don't need fans or ventilation holes. They operate at maximum efficiency without overheating, and sealed cases keep out dirt, dust, and smoke.

Splitters designed for XLR have both 3-pin and 5-pin connectors, allowing you to connect any DMX controller or lighting fixture without adapters. Splitters with terminal blocks come with a set of connectors included.

RDM-Enabled Splitters - Control and Confidence in Every Action

Professional splitters from Sundrax support the RDM protocol, which allows receiving information about devices' operation and status, dynamically reporting current data transmission through indicators. Illuminated and pulsing lights on the splitter housing share important information that helps prevent connection issues, equipment operation problems, and data transmission errors, thus ensuring the show goes on.

This functionality is achieved through a specialized controller of original manufacture that analyzes the DMX signal. However, some lighting fixtures used in scene creation that don't support RDM may react incorrectly to RDM commands from the console, causing malfunctions. Our splitters have a built-in RDM filter, enabling selective RDM deactivation when necessary. This feature increases compatibility and reduces the risk of problems.

Simplify Your Work by Choosing the Optimal Splitter for Your Project

Professional DMX512 splitters/boosters with RDM, dual-zone with galvanic isolation are available in several housing types, allowing you to choose the optimal option for any project. Thanks to their unique characteristics, each enables the implementation of complex and reliable lighting systems that meet the highest requirements.

Splitter Pro

The Splitter Pro  features a compact design intended for installation in standard 19-inch rack mounts. This format allows compact placement of multiple devices in one location, which is especially convenient in limited spaces such as theaters or concert halls. This splitter is designed for operation at positive temperatures indoors.

The splitter can divide 1 or 3 input signals into 5, 8, or 10 outputs, supporting XLR and EtherCON connectors as per customer request. The EtherCON connector provides reliable, quick connection and allows easy integration of the DUO Pro splitter into existing equipment setups. 100% input data redundancy guarantees protection against input signal loss. The splitter automatically switches to backup input when necessary.

Incredibly lightweight and compact, this splitter weighs just 1.2 kilograms and is only 11 centimeters deep. Due to its dimensions, it's perfect for touring activities where every gram counts. The minimalist housing has no buttons. This is the lightest professional splitter of its class on the market.

Another feature of the Pro series is the dual combined PowerCON power connector. This connector allows daisy-chaining multiple devices. Thanks to the locking system, PowerCON connectors are securely fixed, preventing accidental equipment disconnection.

IP65-rated Duo Arma splitter in outdoor installation environment

Splitter Duo Arma

This splitter in a sealed, dust- and moisture-proof IP65-rated housing is designed for uninterrupted, reliable operation with outdoor installations – from arctic environments to tropical climates and arid desert conditions. Weighing only 0.85 kilograms, the Splitter Duo Arma  operates in a temperature range from -40 to +70 Celsius and is suitable for uncompromising signal optimization in outdoor installations worldwide.

This professional splitter version allows signal branching configuration for 6 ports in two schemes: 1 to 5 or 2 times 1 to 2. Input and output DMX cables, as well as power cable connections, are made through cable entries integrated into the device housing.
