DMX Over Power Lines: Control Lighting Using Existing AC Wiring

2 Minute Read

In large-scale installations like architectural lighting, city infrastructure, or retrofits, running separate DMX signal lines is not always practical or cost-effective. That’s where DMX over power line technology offers a smart alternative – allowing you to transmit DMX512 control data using the same 110/220V power cables already in place.

This method is actively used by Sundrax in its PowerGate product line, delivering reliable, real-time control without extra cabling.

What Is DMX Over Power?

DMX over power refers to a method of sending DMX512 control signals over existing AC power lines using power line communication (PLC). This technology modulates the DMX signal into the power network and extracts it at the destination using compatible devices.

Unlike Power over DMX (which delivers power over DMX cables), this solution moves the DMX signal over mains power lines – making it perfect for hard-to-reach or historically protected sites.

Where Does It Make Sense?

  • Street lighting upgrades with no signal cable access
  • Historic buildings and monuments where infrastructure must remain untouched
  • Long-distance outdoor installations across bridges, streets, or parks
  • Temporary setups for events or festivals, where trenching is not feasible

How It Works

  • A DMX transmitter (e.g., PowerGate Arma) modulates the DMX data into the power line
  • One or more receivers (e.g., PowerGate Solid) extract the signal and convert it back to standard DMX
  • The system uses HomePlug PLC technology, designed for stable operation on 110/220V

Signal integrity is maintained using frequency separation and built-in isolation. All Sundrax devices support RDM and web-based configuration.

Sundrax Products with DMX Over Power

PowerGate Arma – IP65-rated, rugged unit for outdoor use, ideal for public spaces. Supports up to 4 opto-isolated DMX outputs. View PowerGate Arma

PowerGate Solid – Compact indoor version for cabinets or protected environments. Also supports up to 4 isolated DMX ports. View PowerGate Solid

Both devices are plug-and-play ready and easily configured via browser.

From a Sundrax Engineer:

We use DMX over power whenever there’s no room for signal cable. It saves infrastructure costs and makes it possible to modernize lighting in sensitive or constrained environments.

Planning a project where signal wiring is difficult or prohibited? Let Sundrax help you implement DMX over power line technology – and simplify your control system without compromising on performance.
