But what happens if a high-voltage surge ⚡️, for example, due to a short circuit, connection error, or even during a thunderstorm, enters one of the sections? Without <strong>galvanic isolation</strong>, such failures can damage or destroy all equipment across the network.</p><p>We spoke with a Sundrax engineer <a href="https://www.linkedin.com/in/alex-chomsky-2a37b6311/">Alex Chomsky</a> about how <strong>galvanic isolation</strong> works in DMX networks, why it’s essential, and where it must be implemented without fail.</p>

<p><strong>Galvanic isolation</strong> is the electrical separation of connected devices while preserving signal transmission. In DMX networks, it is typically achieved using <strong>optocouplers (optical isolators)</strong> or transformers embedded in <strong>splitters</strong>, amplifiers, or interface modules.</p><div class="raw-html-embed"><h3 id="referens2">
  Where Galvanic Isolation is Applied 📡
</h3></div><ul style="list-style-type:disc;"><li><strong>DMX Splitters</strong>: Each output is galvanically isolated, preventing short circuits from spreading across the network.</li><li><strong>DMX-USB Interfaces</strong>: Galvanic isolation between the computer and the DMX network reduces the risk of PC damage.</li><li><strong>Ethernet–DMX Transceivers</strong> (ArtNet, sACN): These protect the digital network from electrical surges traveling through lighting cables.</li></ul>

  What is Galvanic Isolation? 🔌
</h2></div>

<p>Without<strong> galvanic isolation</strong>, the entire DMX signal relies on a single ground. A voltage surge ⚡️ (even between two power phases on a stage) can create a potential difference that may damage or destroy interface equipment. This is especially critical for long cable runs or when power is drawn from different distribution boards.</p><h4>Example 📌</h4><p>One of Sundrax’s clients used a splitter without <strong>galvanic isolation</strong> for facade lighting. When a power supply fault occurred in one section, not only the end devices but also the controller inside the building failed. Product Overview

<p>The Splitter Selective Pro is a two-channel DMX512 signal distributor with full RDM protocol support and represents an effective solution for controlling lighting equipment that uses the DMX512 standard.</p><p>The device features 2 input and 9 output DMX ports and can operate in single or dual-channel mode, distributing one or two independent DMX streams respectively. In single-channel mode, the DMX stream from the first input port (A) can be distributed to 10 output ports. In dual-channel mode, DMX streams from 2 input ports (A and B) can each be distributed to 9 output ports with the ability to select the input signal source for each output port.</p><p>Splitter Selective Pro has intelligent indication, displaying the presence and dynamics of the DMX stream separately for channels A and B, as well as the presence of RDM interface signals (ANSI E1.20). The distributor provides automatic detection of operating modes.</p><p>The device is designed in a case for installation in a 19-inch rack, occupying only one rack unit (1U).&nbsp;</p><ul style="list-style-type:disc;"><li>5000V galvanic isolation on all ports with TVS diode protection</li><li>Zero-latency signal processing to prevent timing desynchronization</li><li>Standard 1U rack mount design (482 x 44 x 110 mm)</li><li>PowerCON TRUE1 power connector with universal AC input (100V-277V, 50/60Hz)</li><li>Optional DC power (9V-36V) for mobile applications</li><li>Available with XLR5, XLR3 connector configurations</li></ul><p>The Splitter Selective Pro can be used at positive temperatures in indoor and covered outdoor venues.</p>
